Only 78 clasps issued for the attempted invasion of Ireland, 12 October, 1798. Alexander Patterson is confirmed on the roll for both clasps as an Ordinary Seaman. He served aboard H.M.S. Canada in 1798 and aboard H.M.S. Bellerophon at the battle of Trafalgar. Bellerophon suffered very heavily at Trafalgar with total casualties of 150, including her Captain, John Cooke, who was killed. Only Colossus had higher casualties.
