John Gurd was born in Tisbury, Wiltshire. A Labourer by occupation and a member of the 3rd Battalion Wiltshire Regiment, he attested for regular service at Devizes on 5 June 1899, aged 18 years, 4 months. With the 2nd Battalion he served in South Africa, November 1900-May 1903. With copied service papers.
