Footnote

Private Hickey was wounded at Reitvlei on 19 October, 1900, when a Boer party of about fifty attacked the column's rear-guard while their oxen were grazing. The post was held by an N.C.O. of the regiment and a small detail of men who successfully held off the enemy attack until reinforced by a squadron of Carabiniers. One man was killed and five wounded including Hickey.
