Date of Auction: 6th September 2016

Estimate: £180 - £200

A ‘coin-silver’ cased pocket watch, by Waltham, the white enamel with signed ‘AWCo, Waltham’, with black Roman numerals and subsidiary seconds dial, the centre over-painted in cream with Arabic numerals 13-24 in red, high bevelled glass, the full plate movement signed ‘Wm Ellery, Waltham, Mass’ and numbered ‘2211503’, the heavy case stamped ‘Fahys Coin No 1’, watch diameter 58mm, gross weight 171gm. £180-200

Condition Report

The dial is chipped to the edge at 2 o’clock and has some blue hairlines at 12 o’clock; the overpainted detail shows some wear. The movement appears to run when wound, but remains untested for timekeeping. The case shows general light surface wear all over. We recommend all watches purchased at auction will require a full service.

Waltham produced many 1857 model watches which were cased in coin silver (from melted coinage), which differs from sterling silver, being only 90% pure.
