Sold for £850

Estimate: £850 - £1,200

An Art Deco silver, ivory and sapphire letter opener, by Cartier, the ivory handle in gold mount accented with cabochon sapphires, to silver blade, signed ‘Cartier, Made in France’, numbered ‘5071’, bearing UK import marks for 1928, and maker’s mark ‘JC’, length 22.5cm. £850-1200

Condition Report

The handle is in good condition with minimal wear. The sapphires are quite well matched, with a little wear to the peaks, and some inclusions within. The metal work shows some general wear, with some scuffing and scratches to the blade and a little rubbing around the signature. There are three further partial marks (two to the silver and one to the gold) which look to be French assay marks. The blade is a little loose in its attachment to the handle. Gross weight 37gm.
