Edward the Confessor (1042-1066), Penny, Expanding Cross type [Light issue], Newport, Sigeweard, sipar[d on n]ipepor, pellet in first and fourth quarter, 0.85g/12h (Blackburn et al, BNJ 1993, p.125, no.2, this coin; Freeman –; Stewartby I, 288, same rev. die; N 820; S 1176). Badly chipped, otherwise very fine, excessively rare £300-£400

Coins of Newport have been ascribed to Newport Pagnell (Bucks) and Newport Pond (Essex), but proof positive linking these coins to either place is lacking
