The bacchantes were the female followers of the cult of Bacchus, the Ancient Greek god of wine, fertility and religious ecstacy.

Condition Report

The cameo is well carved, with slightly wear only. There is one hairline running vertically down the background, just in front of the figures face. The gold mount is unmarked and untested. Cameo measures 49.5 x 40mm.
